Slumdog Millionaire

Ariel and I saw a great movie yesterday. Slumdog Millionaire. I won’t spoil anything, but it revolves around a street kid in Mumbai and sort of tracks his life from early childhood to early adulthood. Mostly what was fascinating was just the peek into the life of the slums. Slums the world over are crazy and fascinating places. On the one hand, depressing as hell. On the other, sort of a testament to the resiliance and ingenuity of human life. People will figure out ways to survive even in some of the most downtrodden places. The slums of Mumbai are in danger though.

Interesting, will add it to my wish list.

Check out the book Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts (believe they are making a movie out of it now) a great read albeit very long 900+ pgs; that talks about the Mumbai slums in depth. Some really interesting and inspiring stuff.

The Shantaram movie is going to be so fucking sick. Mira Nair is going to direct it and Johnny Depp is going to star in it. I can’t wait. Another really, really good India novel is White Tiger. It just won the Booker Prize. I loved Slumdog so hard.

One thing that was beautiful about India was that everything was massively recycled/reused. The garbage and junk thrown all over the streets was ugly, but having it all over the place meant that people would take reusable things that others throw away, and the wandering goats and cows could eat your cabbage cores, etc.

Of course I’m not saying that having poverty widespread enough that people need to pick through the garbage to live is a good thing…
