I lived in Seattle for a couple of years in the early 90s and was (initially) amazed at how the city completely shut down at the first sign of snow one winter. As a KS native, I was accustomed to carrying on as usual, chains, sand in the trunk, chocolate bar in case of emergency, etc. However, that was before I tried to get to work from my home on Queen Anne to downtown Seattle. Basically, no one in a vehicle (or *on* a vehicle, other than a bike) could move. Apparently, the omnipresent rain had turned into a fine sheet of ice, upon which the snow gently laid -- gently, that is, until one tried to drive upon it. And then... I can't even tell you how many cars and other vehicular sundry were skidded out all over the place.

Now, I live in the Congo, and we don't have to worry about that shit here. (Just renegade warlords and such so it's all good!)

Anyway, have a great time in Bali -- if you dive, please go diving! It's truly spectacular.

Wow. I can't imagine. Here where I live they don't think of closing roads or schools until there are school buses flipping down the interstate on 6 inches of black ice.

I'm reminded of this:
Attention citizens the Greater Seattle Metropolitan Area. As we have now received 1/16th of an inch of snow, municipal code N-774290.4.c is in effect, requiring all drivers currently on the roads to drive their vehicle into a ditch at the earliest convenient moment. If you are unable to do so, because your nearest ditch is already filled with vehicles, you may instead precipitate either a rear-ender or a fender-bender. Your compliance will ensure that local news stations have no difficulty obtaining footage for their "BlizzardWatch '06!!" coverage, which began three days ago and will continue until the last sludgy lump of ice has melted from the median of I-5.
